Terry Pomerantz, in his research on different tobacco-producing countries, has explored the world of Mexican cigars and presents Casa Turrent cigars.
The History of Casa Turrent Cigars
In a small village surrounded by volcanos in the state of Veracruz, southwest of Mexico, Roberto Turrent, a new Spanish settler, established himself in 1880.
Mainly cultivating the traditional Mexican tobacco, Negro San Andres, Roberto Turrent added in the 1950s Sumatra plants, a tobacco whose leaves are perfectly suited for making cigar wrappers.
Until 1972, the Turrent family dedicated itself almost exclusively to tobacco cultivation. In 1972, they acquired the Te Amo cigar factory and ventured into cigar production.
Following the American embargo on Cuban products, the demand for Mexican cigars soared, and Casa Turrent cigars quickly secured a notable position in the American market.
Alejandro Turrent, the founder’s grandson, and his team also developed the European, Asian, and Middle Eastern markets.
Main Qualities of Casa Turrent Cigars
Cigars made with Negro San Andres tobacco offer bittersweet flavors and aromas of cocoa and dark chocolate.
Mexican cigars, in general, are not among Terry Pomerantz’s favorites. “I am wary of most agricultural products from Mexico. There is massive use of insecticides and chemical fertilizers, and the controls are inadequate. If I don’t eat strawberries from Mexico, I’m not tempted to try their tobacco.”

Formats
The Casa Turrent 1880 is a Double Robusto with a Negro San Andres filler aged 10 to 12 years and Criollo San Andres wrappers aged at least 5 years.
The Casa Turrent 1942 Robusto with its typical Mexican San Andres wrapper offers a consistent draw and a tasting experience that gradually reveals heavier earthy leather flavors.
The Casa Turrent 1901 Gran Robusto. Its dark color reflects its strength, created by the presence of Nicaraguan tobacco in its filler.
The Casa Turrent 1973 Torpedo of medium strength is composed of a San Andres Criollo wrapper and a Nicaraguan binder and filler.
