 Partagas Cigars: A Brief History

Founded in 1845 by Jaime Partagas Ravelo, Partagas is one of the oldest cigar factories in Cuba.

To ensure proper supply for its factory ‒the largest in Cuba at the time-, Jaime Partagas purchases tobacco plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region. Today, Partagas real fabrica de tabacos is still the 2nd most important cigar manufacturer in Cuba.

Jaime Partagas is also known for having hired “readers”, as early as 1860, to read literary works out loud in his workshops to entertain the torcedores who would roll cigars by hand for hours on end.

 How Partagas are Made

The tobacco leaves that are used to make Partagas cigars are carefully selected. The fermentation and aging processes go through rigorous control. Each cigar is rolled by hand by experienced torcedores and torcedoras who know how to skillfully combine traditional and modern techniques.

 Main Qualities of Partagas Cigars

Partagas cigars stand out for their strength and complex flavours of earth, leather, wood and spices.

Rolled with great care, this ensures an even burn and excellent draw, which the brand is known for. Moreover, the unique earthy quality of Partagas acts as a binder that brings together the complex and specific flavors to each Partagas vitola.

 The Different Partagas Cigars

There are numerous different Partagas cigars. In fact, there are 23 classic modules and a wide selection of limited editions.

  • The Partagas D Series No 4. This 124 mm Robusto releases flavours of wood, exotic spices, earth, cocoa and herbs. It is a sultry cigar made from strong tobaccos that come from the Vuelta Abajo region, where the climate, soil and knowhow of the paysanos help produce the best Cuban tobaccos.
  • The Partagas P Series No 2. This 156 mm Torpedo releases leather, oak, pepper, caramel, roasted nut and orange peel undertones. First smoke is medium-bodied, with a smooth and spicy finish.

Among the other Partagas vitola, let’s mention the Partagas Club, the Partagas Lusitañias, the Coronas Gordas Añejados, the Partagas Mini and the Partagas No 1 Series and E Series.
